Headaches & Migraines
Chiropractic Care for Spartanburg Headaches and Migraines
At Ivey-O'Sullivan Health Care Services in Spartanburg, Dr. Gabriel D. OSullivan and Dr. Stacy Gantt provide chiropractic healing for neck and back pain, headaches, and migraines. Many of our patients come to us after a personal injury or an auto accident with whiplash pain, back pain, and neck pain. What many of our patients don't realize is that their chronic headaches may also be related to their injury. At Ivey-OSullivan Health Care, we have successfully provided many people in the Spartanburg community with relief from chronic headache and migraine pain.
There are many different types of headaches, including migraines, spinal headaches, tension (cervicogenic) headaches, cluster headaches, and ocular headaches. Chiropractic treatments, including decompression therapy, are used by our chiropractors to provide non-surgical and non-medicated treatments to manage headaches.
Headaches and Migraines: What is the Cause?
Headache causes are almost as diverse and varied as the types of headaches. Headaches can be triggered by nerve damage caused by a personal injury or an auto accident. Whiplash also commonly leads to headaches and can even cause concussions. In addition, headaches can be related to drug and food reactions, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), stress and fatigue, tight neck muscles, and irregular blood sugar.
The exact cause of migraines remains unknown. Associated triggers include: florescent lights, strong odors, lack of sleep, stress, and foods high in an amino acid called tyramine. A tramatic auto accident injury or a work injury can also cause these headaches. A large number of these headaches can be traced to personal injury accidents in the upper back or neck.
Headaches and Their Effects on Patients
More intense headaches are often accompanied by nausea, impaired vision, and light sensitivity. These headache symptoms are caused by abnormal constriction of the blood vessels in the brain. The initial impairment of blood flow causes the visual impairment. After the constriction, the vessels rapidly dilate causing the pounding pain of a migraine headache.
Tension headaches and spinal headaches usually manifest as constant dull pain on either one side or both sides of the head. Loss of motion or position in the top cervical vertebrae exerts pressure on the rectus capitis posterior minor (RCPM). When the RCPM muscle goes into spasm it migrates upward to a thin pain-sensitive tissue called the dura mater that covers the brain and this in turn causes the headache.
Stress, poor posture and pinched nerves in the neck and back can cause spinal and tension headaches. A personal injury or an auto accident injury can also result in these headaches. Back and neck pain sometimes accompanies spinal headaches.
At Ivey-O'Sullivan Health Care Services our goal is to offer long-term pain relief for all types of back pain, neck pain, and headache pain. Using our advanced chiropractic techniques we can improve your migraine and headache pain and help you return to a happy, healthy, pain free life.
